Terry Patten is a philosopher, author, activist, social entrepreneur, consultant, coach, and the author of the groundbreaking book, A New Republic of the Heart: An Ethos for Revolutionaries.
As an author, he co-wrote the book Integral Life Practice (with Ken Wilber, Adam Leonard and Marco Morelli) which distills ancient and modern practices into a contemporary transformational lifestyle. He has also authored three previous books and over two dozen book chapters, magazine articles and academic papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
As a philosopher-activist, he has long been a leading voice for facing, examining, and healing our global crisis through the marriage of higher consciousness and activism. As creator and host of the webcast “Beyond Awakening,” he has explored the biggest questions of our time in over a hundred public conversations with some of the world’s most prominent and dynamic thought leaders.
As a teacher and coach, he has introduced thousands of people to Integral Practice in person and over the web where he created and taught the online courses, Integral Spiritual Practice, Living the Integral Heart, An Integral Soul Journey, and Awakening Your Revolutionary Heart. And he has helped hundreds of people activate a transformative practice, realize awakened consciousness, and discover and fulfill their life purpose.
As a community organizer, he founded and leads Bay Area Integral, which gathers and supports an integral community in the San Francisco Bay Area. His roots as an organizer go back to his childhood. He was raised in an intentional community founded “as a witness for peace and brotherhood”, the York Center Community Co-operative outside Chicago, and he spent the first fifteen years of his adult life doing intense radical spiritual practice in the ashram founded by Adi Da Samraj.
As a social entrepreneur and consultant, he founded the pioneering consciousness technology company, Tools For Exploration, led a team at the HeartMath Institute that developed their first heart-rate variability monitor, and he is currently involved in businesses engaged in restorative redwood forestry, developing fossil-fuel alternatives, addressing collective trauma, and creating new currencies for a sustainable economy.
Terry currently serves on the board of Dr. Rick Hanson’s Wellsprings Institute for Neuroscience and Contemplative Wisdom, is chief strategy officer for Thomas Hübl’s Academy of Inner Science, is a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Integral Theory and Practice, and belongs to Deepak Chopra’s Evolutionary Leaders group.
He holds degrees from the University of Michigan and John F. Kennedy University, and he has taught at the University of Notre Dame, Columbia University, San Francisco State University, John F. Kennedy University and Meridian University.
He worked with Ken Wilber as part of a core team at Integral Institute to develop Integral Life Practice, which distills ancient and modern practices into an intelligent contemporary transformational lifestyle. He co-created the Integral Life Practice Starter Kit and was the senior writer of the 2008 book Integral Life Practice: A 21st-Century Blueprint for Physical Health, Emotional Balance, Mental Clarity, and Spiritual Awakening.
Earlier, for 15 years, he undertook a life of intensive spiritual discipline in the monastic setting of Vision Mound Seminary. He then founded the catalog company Tools For Exploration, which defined the field of consciousness technologies. See Terry’s Full Bio.
